Over the past couple of years, experimental hardcore band I, Valiance have been through the ringer with multiple lineup changes and several different permanent and fill in vocalists. I had a lot of mixed feelings about the direction they were taking musically with the implementation of trap and hip-hop beats in the mix and a “party vibe” at live shows. It just didn’t work in my opinion. But with their new single 'I Am Free / Three Daggers' and the return of original vocalist Mark Poida, the boys have turned a corner and made a big return to form. There are really deep lows and trademark Poida squeals plus lots of heavy guitar riffs, distorted electronics and a strange alien-like vocal turn at the end of the song.
The music video directed by Dylan Gillies-Parsons and Ed Reiss features the band rocking a selection of animal and clown masks as well as white gowns like they’ve just broken out of a mental asylum. They drive around the residential streets of Melbourne holding violent weapons like guns and sledge hammers before they start gate crashing one of the houses. The band members can also be seen doing random household chores while their doubles are dancing around like hooligans complete with party balloons and a rainbow piñata. Who knows what the fuck is going on in this music video? I guess it doesn’t really matter being I, Valiance. Still it’s very entertaining to watch.
