“Your system is malfunctioning, malfunctioning. But fake it til ya make it. Til you make or break it. What’s that you said? You’re mumbling, you’re mumbling. Turn up the stereo, stereo, stereotype.”
RedHook are a three-piece Heavy Electro Alternative band from Sydney, New South Wales. They have a very distinctive sound, combining elements of Industrial Electronica, Rap Metal and Alternative Rock together into a cohesive whole. Vocalist Emmy Mack has quite a diverse vocal range which she demonstrates on this track. She delivers everything from ear piercing screams to dark hushed whispers and elegant angelic cleans during the chorus. It’s quite refreshing to see such a dynamic vocal range, especially from a female vocalist, as they usually aim for only one extreme; either cleans or screams, not both.
Musically, there is a lot going on here from crunchy metal riffs, dark electronic synths and chopped up melodic rhythms. The lyrics focus on the importance of individuality and being yourself as opposed to being fake and trying too hard to fit into a stereotype. I think a lot of this stems from the media and advertising, telling people what they “should” be doing, acting or being like. Therefore, becoming one of the sheep and not embracing their own strengths, personal qualities and creative talents.
