Well what do we have here? WA’s notorious prodigal son of metalcore has decided to take a break from holidaying in Bali and put together another tune for us to collectively listen to and ask ourselves, ‘What the hell is going on?’
Between the music he puts out and viral videos plastered over Facebook, Jekel has once again put out a mediocre-at-best release which is really within the same caliber and quality of the bands he claims to be so superior to. With another track he’s released being aptly named 'Hypocrites', I feel there’s some kind of joke to be made here, but I’ll let your own mind get creative with that one. We’re here to talk about his latest foray into proving the "haters" wrong, enter 'Primal'.
First and foremost, if Jekel had put a 15 second piano intro at the start of this song, I would have been convinced he was rehashing one of his releases in 'Broken Mirrors'. Alas, I’m thankfully mistaken as I feel as though 'Primal' starts off and kicks in harder than the aforementioned track does, only to be abruptly interrupted by cleans that I feel come in too early. They felt like a jarring speedbump right as I was speeding up to merge onto the motorway and the song loses a touch of momentum in my opinion. In saying that, he does recover quickly with some catchy hooks and absolutely air tight production. Seriously, whoever is mixing and mastering his stuff is doing a really top-notch job. If you’ve seen Jekel’s antics and shenanigans on social media you would never ever expect him to sound like this, credit given where credit is due.
I know this is a seemingly positive review for a Jekel track for someone who has a tense history with him dating back to the now infamous ‘Bunnings Snag’ live stream, I really tried to enjoy Primal, I really did, but the positivity stops here. On the surface, this sounds like it was ripped off of a Myspace profile in 2008, doused in Myka Relocate flavour (specifically their song 'Playing It Safe') and sprinkled with a C grade Windwaker breakdown (check those boys from Melbourne out, they’re killing it). To be blunt, Jekel is once again playing a small fish in a big pond inhabited by sharks, it’s time to deliver on his promises and give us some next level music otherwise all of his efforts will ultimately be for naught.
Myka Relocate // Playing It Safe feat. Jonny Craig
Probably the best takeaway from all of this is that Jek is definitely showing progress. It’s a vast improvement on 'Broken Mirrors' and I’m fonder of 'Primal' than I am of 'Set Me Alight' which features Alex Kohler, formerly of Chelsea Grin. Who knows, maybe one day, all the faux vodka shots and beer induced vomiting will pay off, but I’m still waiting for THAT track that propels Jekel to the level he claims to be at. Until then, every one of his haters holds a valid point as to why no one should be paying attention yet; and honestly, I’m pretty keen to see what he comes up with next.
Would You Go And See Them (WYGAST) 5/5 - I’m far too curious as to what this guy’s deal is
Personal Enjoyment: 4/10
