“What will it take to cease the silence in my head. Nothing haunts us like the words we never said. (and these memories) And they will stay, I promise I won't forget. Nothing haunts us like the words we never said (they pave the way, pave the way for me).”
'Damien' is the latest single to be released from Mirrors forthcoming EP "Cold Sanctuary." At its core, the track is a beautiful tribute to Tyson Taifer’s brother Damien who tragically passed away at the young age of 21. The music video directed by Ed Reiss shows the events leading up to his death in gripping detail through re-enactment. This was then interspersed with home video footage and childhood memories such as a family dinner and the brothers riding their bikes down the street. Added to this is the funeral filmed inside St Vincent de Paul Parish which sees the band members being heavily involved in the service and procession of the casket.
Talking about death, particularly death of a close family member, will always be difficult subject matter but these boys handle it with dignity and grace. It is a deeply moving song and even if you didn’t know Damien personally, I feel like most people would be touched emotionally by it. Hat’s off to guitarist Tyson Taifer for being so open, honest and vulnerable in writing about his brother’s passing in musical form. Most importantly it shows how precious and short life truly is. That we should be grateful for each moment and keep expressing our love for one another. RIP Damien Taifer!
