"Request the best from the rest to keep reality in check Anxiety keeps the rope tied around my neck Why do we try to complicate? Rhetorical this is our fate"

Over the past month, Aussie hardcore stalwarts, Reactions, have been building to the recent release of their latest 4 track “Discomposure”. Now that the EP has dropped in early August, and is available through all the usual streaming outlets, it’s about time to lay down some thoughts on one of the lead singles, ‘Expiry of Sanity’.

2019 has mostly been a quiet year for the Adelaide outfit, taking part in a tour with DREGG and Life’s Ill back in February which covers a majority of what their public activity over the past 8 months. Thankfully, behind the scenes has been different, as Reactions have been working on their latest offering to Australia’s acclaimed heavy music scene, providing 4 tracks that will have old fans salivating, and new fans turning their heads in preparation to jump on board the hype train.

‘Expiry of Sanity’ kicks off like the band’s 2019, a slow rumble that builds with excitement, as a great riff leads to the introduction of vocals and drums before being presented with the band hitting full tilt, this song is sure to incite some wild pits on Reactions next live circuit around the country. The tone of the guitars, background filling ambiance, aggression in the vocals and overall chemistry and groove the band possesses is attention grabbing, to say the least.

Over the years, I haven’t been a fan of hardcore as a genre. It was something that never truly managed to resonate with me, and this track leans more towards a metalcore vibe, but certain aspects of hardcore remain apparent. In saying that, I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed ‘Expiry of Sanity’ in comparison to previous songs I’d heard by the same band. Reactions' approach to writing in this style and their constant development as musicians puts them above most other bands I’ve followed for a similar amount of time.

Unexpectedly, this song does a lot right, keeping a mostly moderate pace and only slowing down where necessary, leading to an open, full, middle breakdown with a lead I can’t help but feel has been directly ripped from somewhere else. Since I can’t remember, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt as said, pre-existing riff doesn’t exist, or the original band wasn’t memorable enough for me to retain where it came from. Either all, this part of the song was the glue that holds the rest of a strong composition together.

On that note, I want to especially commend the chorus here, the push and pull nature of the melody really draws the listener in and keeps you engaged with each drawn out note and rhyming lyric. On the flip, I wish the transitional techniques into this chorus were swapped, as I feel the big vocal build up that precedes the first chorus would have hit so much harder if used in the second half of the song. Simultaneously, the stop and drop into the main hook would have been more effective earlier on, but I’m not here to complain. Small nuances on an otherwise great track.

After a quiet period, Reactions are back with a bang and “Discomposure” should whet the appetites of heavy music fans all over the country. If you enjoyed ‘Expiry of Sanity’ check out the rest of the EP now.
